The NBA has a few special dates throughout the entire calendar year. They include Free Agency; the start of the Regular Season; Trade Deadline Day; and of course the Playoffs.
One of those special days just took place, the 2015 Trade Deadline Day. Who would’ve thought that so many transactions would take place on this year’s Deadline? As always, teams trying to position themselves for a playoff run, or teams rebuilding themselves for the future. Either way, it was very exciting.
Here’s a breakdown of all the transactions…
Minnesota acquires: PF Kevin Garnett
Brooklyn acquires: PF Thaddeus Young
Winner: Both made out well. KG returns home to assist with the Minny rebuild. Brooklyn gets younger.
Miami acquires: PG Goran Dragic, SG Zoran Dragic
Phoenix acquires: SF Danny Granger and two first-round picks (from Miami) and SF John Salmons (from New Orleans)
New Orleans acquires: PG Norris Cole, C Justin Hamilton, SF Shawne Williams (from Miami).
Winner: Miami. Yes they gave up two first rounders, however they now have a true star point guard who wants to play there. A starting line up of Dragic, Wade, Deng, Bosh and Whiteside will be tough.
Phoenix acquires: PG Brandon Knight (from Bucks), PG Kendall Marshall (from Bucks)
Milwaukee acquires: PG Michael Carter-Williams (from 76ers), C Miles Plumlee (from Suns), PG Tyler Ennis (from Suns)
Philadelphia acquires: Draft picks
Winner: Milwaukee. What was Philly’s problem with MCW? Thought they were building a pretty good young core. Guess they know best. Who needs a good young player in a talent based point guard driven league? Milwaukee also scored big with Ennis and Plumlee. They were already heading into the playoffs, but have now added more young pieces to a what will be a great team in the years to come. I’d say a future big three of Michael Carter-Williams, Parker and Antetokounmpo bolds well for the Bucks franchise.
Detroit acquires: PG Reggie Jackson (from Thunder)
Oklahoma City acquires: C Enes Kanter (from Jazz), SF Steve Novak (from Jazz), PG D.J. Augustin (from Pistons), SF Kyle Singler (from Pistons)
Utah acquires: Kendrick Perkins (from Thunder), PF Grant Jerrett (from Thunder), rights to Tibor Pleiss, draft picks
Winner: Detroit. They had a good point guard before the trade, however they improve with one phone call. Jackson will now have the chance to lead a team. The pick and roll with Drummond should be special!
Boston acquires: PG Isaiah Thomas (from Suns), PF Jonas Jerebko and SF Luigi Datome (from Pistons)
Phoenix acquires: SG Marcus Thornton and a 2016 first-round pick
Detroit acquires: SF Tayshaun Prince (from Celtics)
Winner: Boston. Wait a minute, is that correct? Yes, Danny Ainge acquires the point guard he’s wanted for some time now. They do have Marcus Smart at the same position, however he may become the back-up, or just another talent Ainge can use for future trades (along with their many draft picks).
Portland acquires: SG Arron Afflalo, SF Alonzo Gee
Denver acquires: PF Thomas Robinson, SG Will Barton, PF Victor Claver, 2016 first-round pick (lottery protected)
Winner: Portland. They add a solid player that deepens their bench for the playoffs.
Houston acquires: PG Pablo Prigioni
New York acquires: G: Alexey Shved and two second-round picks
Winner: Even. Houston gets a decent back-up guard. New York gets a couple of second round picks to start rebuilding their “cupboard.”
Houston acquires: PG K.J. McDaniels
Philadelphia acquires: PG Isaiah Canaan and second-round pick
Winner: Even. Houston gets another decent back-up guard. Philly receives a decent young player and another pick to add to their stockpile.
Sacramento acquires: PG Andre Miller
Washington acquires: PG Ramon Sessions
Winner: Even. Miller rejoins coach Karl in SacTown and will be a positive influence on the team. Washington gets a good back-up point guard to give John Wall a breather before and during the playoffs.
Philadelphia acquires: C JaVale McGee, 2015 Oklahoma City first-round pick (top-18 protected), rights to F Chukwudiebere Maduabum
Denver acquires: Rights to G/F Cenk Akyol
Winner: Philly, okay.
New Orleans acquires: G Ish Smith, the rights to Latavious Williams, cash considerations and draft considerations.
Oklahoma City acquires: Draft considerations
Winner: Even, okay.
Now that the Deadline is done, let’s get ready for a strong and exciting playoff run!
